Agriveneto for a sustainable potato supply chain

It is important to combine experience and knowledge of the land with new technologies, embarking on paths of digitization of farms, in order to arrive at sustainable and regenerative agriculture as soon as possible.

The path of digitization of the Agriveneto potato supply chain started in 2022, under the push of the Consorzio dal Cuore Veneto, which, together with xFarm, aims to spread digitization as much as possible on the contributing farms, with the goal of increasing product quality by using only the strictly necessary inputs, whether water resources or technical products.

"This is work that will take several years because, given the climate changes abrupt and abrupt, there is a need to verify many variables through sensing at xFarm. The ultimate goal is to obtain a product of the highest quality, marketed under the brand name Pepidora, and cultivated in territories rich in biodiversity because they are characterized by diversified agriculture, with particular attention to crop rotations and the contribution of organic matter to the soil, which allows it to be enriched and to think about an approach of regenerative agriculture" says Piergiorgio Agostini, president of Consorzio dal Cuore Veneto.

The collaboration between Agriveneto and xFarm, which provided its sensors and platform, allows for more sustainable agricultural practices. In particular, tensiometric and volumetric soil moisture sensors have been installed, which allow, through experimentation, to identify the optimal irrigation strategy, which is to irrigate only when needed and with the necessary amounts of water, without wasting the resource.

In terms of defense, the platform provides insights into fungal diseases and insects through data collected from sensors such as traps with automatic insect counts, particularly potato moth.

"The technology is and will be increasingly important in the world of agriculture because the collection and use of data it provides will be critical to optimizing decisions and reducing the resources we use. The consortium believes in this project and will continue it in the near future because we firmly believe that we will be able to further reduce the inputs and resources we use to grow potatoes." says Stefano Nardi, technician.
