Viterra and xFarm Technologies are pleased to announce a collaboration to support Viterra’s suppliers in the adoption of practices focused on carbon measurement and regenerative agriculture. The project will first be implemented in Italy and will then be expanded to other European countries. Farmers who participate in this programme will be guided and supported through xFarm Technologies' digital agriculture solutions platform.

Milan, Oct. 28, 2024 - xFarm Technologies, the tech company aiming to digitise the agri-food sector, and Viterra, a world-leading agriculture network which includes the origination and global trading of grains and oilseeds, announced today the launch of a new partnership, during the Agri Data Green Summit - an event organised by xFarm Technologies to explore new horizons in the sector. Thanks to its collaboration with xFarm Technologies, Viterra will provide its current and new suppliers with the latest technological tools and agronomic support for sustainable farming, through two complementary programmes based on carbon measurement and Regenerative Agriculture.

Our partnership

The climate crisis presents entrepreneurs and agricultural operators with a scenario where extreme weather events have an increasing impact on agronomic practices. The collaboration between these two companies will not only address the growing demand for Low-Carbon products—i.e. with reduced carbon emissions—but will also contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change by making agricultural systems more resilient. To achieve this, xFarm Technologies has developed "Viterra Sustainable Farming", an FMIS (Farm Management Information System) platform designed around Viterra’s specific needs and aimed at facilitating farmers' daily operations by encouraging more sustainable practices. The platform will be available both on mobile and desktop.

Thanks to this collaboration, Viterra’s farmers will have access to premium modules on the platform for comprehensive farm management. Among the offered features is the Sustainability Module, which can calculate greenhouse gas emissions, acidification levels, eutrophication, and net water usage.

Suppliers participating in the crop Low-Carbon Program will engage on relevant crops (corn, soft wheat, and barley) and will report related activities on the platform, receiving useful insights that can benefit their land and crops. Additionally, farmers will receive a financial incentive for each tonne of product delivered within the programme.

Viterra will also support its customers with the provision of low carbon crops produced by adopting regenerative agriculture practices. For this reason, the company is also launching the Regenerative Agriculture Program, where farmers will receive assistance in identifying the most suitable regenerative agriculture practices for their land and will be provided with the most advanced suite of tools developed by xFarm Technologies. MRV (Measurement Reporting Verification) geospatial technologies will be rolled out to identify crops and specific Regenerative Agriculture practices. Participating farmers who carry out the agreed-upon regenerative practices, such as crop rotations, cover crops, minimum tillage, and no-tillage, will receive a financial reward.

"By enabling farmers in Viterra’s supply chain to participate in these projects, we can not only reduce the environmental impact of their products, but also create significant added value for them," commented Giovanni Causapruno, Sales Director Europe of xFarm Technologies.

"Together with xFarm Technologies, we want to offer our producers the best-in-class tools and much needed incentives to build a resilient, sustainable and future-proof supply chain. It is an important step against climate change and supporting farmers’ livelihood," commented Stefano Predebon, Global Head of Carbon Trading at Viterra.
