I am 31 years old and originally from Tandil, a city in the province of Buenos Aires. I studied Agricultural Engineering at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the National University of Mar del Plata and graduated in 2018. Since then, I have always worked in companies related to digital agriculture, both from a business and technical development perspective.
In Argentina I had a direct relationship with agriculture, not through my family but through several acquaintances, and the sector always attracted me. I also had one of the main universities for agricultural engineering right near my home, and I saw agriculture as a sector where there would always be job opportunities, as it was very important to the country's economy.
Yes, I live in Alicante, a very nice place. I moved there in February 2022, and since I am of Italian descent, it was quite easy for me to arrange the paperwork to be able to work here, so I joined the Iberian team of xFarm Technologies a few months later. I was the third hire after the Barcelona office opened, so I've been with them pretty much since the beginning. For the past year I have been Business Manager Iberia.
Yes, but it was also very rewarding. Taking on this role was quite a radical change because, when I joined xFarm Technologies Iberia, I started from the bottom, as a sales person. But then came this challenge and I was happy to accept it. It has been a very intense year because the pace in xFarm is always tight and, in addition, we had the integration of Greenfield Technologies, which required a lot of dedication and energy from everyone to get the best out of the merger between the two companies.
More and more companies are looking for tools to obtain data on the practices carried out on farms, which are useful for tracking their supply chain. They are also increasingly looking for tools for sustainability reporting and carbon footprinting, and agribusinesses need to quantify these aspects of on-farm production as well. In all of this, the importance of the supply chain perspective and the requirements related to the Digital Farm Notebook are becoming increasingly evident.
It is a very diverse market. There is a great variety of production throughout the country, crops change within a few kilometers, and this is very positive because you always find very different companies everywhere. These characteristics mean that Spain can position itself as a benchmark in many crops and has leading companies that contribute to the research of new practices or the continuous improvement of existing ones, becoming pioneers in sustainability, crop improvement, regenerative farming practices, etc. Portugal is similar, so these are strengths of the Iberian Peninsula as a whole.
Perhaps the fact that while there are many cutting-edge companies, there are others that seem a bit more reluctant to use new tools, new technologies. It is also true that there is a generational change taking place, the effects of which in terms of digitization are being noticed. It is a phenomenon that is occurring, perhaps more gradually than elsewhere, but it is occurring without a doubt. In general, the Spanish agribusiness sector is very strong and quite open to innovation and new technologies.
Yes, certainly. Because you can improve any aspect that can be measured, and we have several success stories that demonstrate that. We are able to measure practices in the field in real time, and this allows us to provide data that farms can use to understand where they can improve and how. For example, the measurements that we are able to take on farms allow us to provide agribusinesses with all the data on their supply chain, so they can understand what their sources of emissions are, how and where emissions are produced, and so on. base on this data, they can take the necessary measures to improve these parameters, with a view to environmental sustainability.
We have a very good system for measuring Scope 3 emissions, that is, those related to production, which then accounts for most of the emissions for an agribusiness. And then we have collaborations and partnerships with other companies, which give us the ability to measure Scope 1 and 2 emissions as well, so that we cover the whole classification of emissions.
Continue to grow in the Iberian Peninsula. We aim to become the main platform for agribusinesses to quantify their emissions and the main digitization tool for field production.
Yes, at the moment we are about 25 people because with the integration of Greenfield Technologies the team expanded a lot overnight, but we still have at least three positions open, both on the commercial side and on the project execution side.
Actually there is always room for improvement, regardless of size, so we are finding a good market to offer our service. Depending on the size of the company, the type of technology to be used may change. But at the end of the day, we digitize people, not just farms or businesses of this or that size. Our work supports the digital transformation of the people who make up enterprises, so we can implement our solution even on a farm where only one person works.
Yes, it will be held on February 26 in Madrid and we are looking forward to it and to spending an inspiring day exchanging ideas, experiences and know-how with great managers and entrepreneurs, researchers, professionals and specialized journalists from all over Spain and Portugal, as well as Switzerland, Italy, etc. Thanks to the summit, we will be able to better understand where the Iberian agribusiness sector is heading, and learn about the opportunities and technological innovations on the horizon. We will have very interesting case studies, three really unmissable workshops and very valuable networking moments.
