Azienda Agricola Maso Martis: viticulture that pays attention to sustainability

Riccardo De Nadai
Communication Manager

"Viticulture is undergoing great changes, so having a partner like xFarm on hand will be an asset for the future."

We are in the company of Antonio Stelzer, representative of Maso Martis, a winery located in Martignano, in the hills of Trento.

Maso Martis: the history

In the 1980s the first vineyards were planted, and in the 1990s some of the grapes began to be vinified at the winery. At an altitude of 450 meters, the climatic conditions are ideal for growing varieties useful in the production of base sparkling wine, such as Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Meunier.

The company immediately dedicated itself to bubbles, with the production of Trento DOC. After 30 years, it is Antonio's daughters who continue to write the company's history, aiming for quality and with a keen eye on sustainability.

What are the main difficulties you encounter in viticulture?

We work in the hills, with a strong focus on manual labor in the vineyard and maintaining balanced plant disease management. Sustainability and healthiness of the environment around us are among our priorities in viticulture. We need tools and data that allow us to manage plant diseases with greater assurance, trying to save on treatments, field interventions and pesticide products.

How did you approach xFarm?

Especially for the sustainability aspects, we got to know xFarm through personal contacts and immediately installed a weather station with leaf wetness sensors and traps for Scaphoideus titanus, a very important tool for us to obtain accurate data about the presence of the insect and intervene only when needed.

Plans for the future?

First of all, we are pleased to collaborate with companies that, as xFarm, are in tune with our current but also forward-looking vision. The innovative tools offered by xFarm, together with Industry 4.0, allow us to work in an ever-improving way and aim to achieve a product of other quality without sacrificing sustainability.
