Minimum tillage and contracting: Paolo Montana's experience with xFarm - xFarmers Stories

Riccardo De Nadai
Communication Manager

"In an agriculture that is moving toward sustainability and digitization, it is important to have xFarm by your side as a partner in achieving these goals, whether for the contractor or for livestock or grain farms."

In addition to running the family farm with dairy cows in collaboration with his brothers, Paolo Montana works as a contractor. While the brothers take care of the livestock part, Paolo is in charge of the agronomy and contracting operations.

Over the course of 23 years of experience, Paul has specialized in minimum tillage and set up a unique machine: in a single pass, the machine performs tillage, seeding, fertilization and weeding on the row. Thus, in a single pass, several tillage operations can be performed - and as much data collected.

What are the challenges of today's contractor?

Today's contractors are asked to offer services that are increasingly innovative and close to customer needs, such as generating reports that highlight in detail the work done day by day, the area worked, the dosage distributed-from fertilizer, to seed, to plant protection products and herbicides. xFarm enables the automatic production of a report of work done generated on base of data recorded by the machinery itself.

How did you approach xFarm?

Starting with a discussion with a Rivi dealer in Milan, we met. xFarm, with whom we immediately started a business path and with our customers, present and future. Thanks to the platform xFarm we began to create a database and to plan together with the customer, during the winter season, the operations that will be carried out in the following spring.

In addition, with xFarm we are able to obtain, directly from the machinery, a rich and varied range of data that is useful for better managing our businesses and getting a better idea of the costs we have to incur. Through this accumulation of data, we are able to derive so much information to process and exploit. On the computer at home, for example, I can visualize the doses we have distributed at each precise point in the field.

An additional service that made me choose xFarm is to be able to provide client companies with a report of the activities carried out so that the farm can compile the farm notebook automatically through the data I process and transmit to the company, making it easier for companies to compile it.

To whom would you recommend the services offered by xFarm?

I recommend that all contractors adopt the xFarm because it allows them greater control and better management of their fleets.

In the context of an agriculture that is changing and will continue to change rapidly, the availability of information and digitization will help this sector tremendously, particularly from an environmental point of view through a reduction in consumption, steps, and emissions. All of these technologies help make agriculture more sustainable, and the actual improvement from the standpoint of environmental impact and economic savings can be highlighted and conveyed to customers more directly through xFarm.
